This placement would suit... someone interested in helping out the advancement of the study of gibbons in this facility in California (think of the nice weather!).

The goal of this project is to prevent the extinction of this small South East Asian ape. This is done by advancement in gibbon study, propagation and conservation by establishing secure captive gene pools in case attempts to preserve the species in the wild fail.

The Volunteer Role

While you are at the project you will have the opportunity to learn about primates firsthand. You will be working with one of the largest and rarest groups of gibbons in the world, including the Javan Gibbon (there may be less than 2000 remaining in the wild) and the Pileated Gibbon.

  • Preparing gibbon food
  • Feeding the gibbons
  • Cleaning the enclosures and other facilities
  • Behavioural observations
  • Medicating gibbons
  • Research
  • Filing
  • Fundraising
  • Maintenance of grounds and enclosures

Project Location

Santa Clarita, California

Accommodation and Meals

The accommodation is located onsite. You will have a trailer to yourself or share with one other volunteer. You will receive 3 meals a day.
