This placement would suit... Make a difference to the lives of local children in this world-renowned surf spot on South Africa’s beautiful Eastern Cape coastline. You’ll stay in a backpackers’ lodge, teaching basic numeracy, literacy and artistic skills and connecting with the children themselves. Your efforts will build hope and self-respect, equipping children with the skills and confidence to face the world positively - and you'll have lots of time for surfing!
 Programme Highlights
You can make a "real" difference by being willing to get involved 100% with the programme. There will be a strong emphasis on team building, and you will always be required to work with a team of people at the project. Assisting the full-time staff to share the workload of classes, meal-times and sports programmes. The financial contribution is also very powerful in improving the project, as it is run by an NGO non-profit organisation and relies on donations to continue to serve the community. By you being responsible, mature and kind-hearted this experience can greatly benefit the children’s personal development, and quite possibly your own.
Where will I live ?
 The programme is based in the Eastern Cape of South Africa where you will have great weather all year round. At the lodge you will stay in a 4-sleeper bunk room. Lunch and dinner can be prepared in a big self-catering kitchen at your own cost. You may sample the tasty delights of Ubuntu's hearty African dinners at an additional $7 per meal. All necessary shops and supermarkets are minutes' walk away, to purchase groceries for lunch and dinner. A self-service breakfast is provided each morning, which consists of a choice of different cereals and tea/coffee. Premier options are available (private rooms) for the more discerning traveller.
Qualifications and minimum skills
The only qualification that you need is the ability to speak fluent English. You need to be motivated to make a social difference, working with children between the ages of 3 and 16 years old. Personal skills and interests will vary substantially, but you should be good with people and be able to work unsupervised.
What can I do in my spare time ?
 There is plenty of fun time which is a good thing because Jeffrey’s Bay is an international surf Mecca and offers the ultimate in surf culture.
There is a lot to do besides surfing from shopping to adventure activities such as sea kayaking and horse riding, plus miles of unspoiled beaches. With the afternoons open, you’ll have plenty of time to experience the local culture.
