  This placement would suit... Somebody who wants to get out into the African wilderness and experience life on a big game

The Programme - this 8 week programme features many highlights of the 12 week programme with a bias towards fun and adventure activities such as camping in Kruger Park, a 4 day extreme adventure programme in the Sabie area and elephant back riding. There is also plenty of time spent on the reserve in which to learn, participate and experience life on a big 5 game reserve. A 5 day conservation project is also tackled by the group.

Some of the Highlights - Sabie adventure, Kruger Park and Mozambique camping, 3 day hike, elephant safari, bush sleep outs, microlight flights

Location - the reserve is just south of Kruger National park. Nearest entry gate is at Malelane, 20 minutes drive away. The Swazi and Mozambique border are 30-40 minutes away. Transfers from Jo’burg take 5 plus hours.

Accommodation - Gazebo Lodge is your home in the heart of the reserve. Shared single sex bedrooms with en-suite bathroom. On site dining lapa, swimming pool, games room, small bar, boma all facing a lake.

Safety - is of paramount importance both on and off the reserve. Our Gap Year Ranger and Coordinator are on hand 24/7. We only use highly reputable and licensed thirty parties for off property activities. We are registered with the Red Cross helicopter service for emergencies.

Week One
Day 1-3 - Introduction to Kwa Madwala Private Game Reserve, including orientation, bushwalks and game drives.
Day 4-6 - Excursion to the Sabi area for Extreme Adventure Course, including kloofing, bridge swinging and river tubing.
Day 7 - Day visit to Nelspruit Reptile Park and Botanical Gardens.

Week Two
Day 8 - Spend the day visiting a neighbouring game farm which breeds buffalo and rhino.
Day 9-11 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities, including elephant safari and camping out on the reserve.
Day 12-16 - five day camping trip to a beautiful Mozambique beach.

Week Three
Day 17 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities on the reserve.
Day 18-19 - Bird of Prey Expert programme with our visiting expert held partly on and off property. Includes capture, tagging and release of local wild raptors.
Day 20 - Kwa Madwala - conservation activities, including bush walks and game drives, identifying wildlife, tracks, spoor and plants.
Day 21 - Day off - chill out at Gazebo Lodge or take a trip into Malelane.

Week Four
Day 22-25 - 3-night camping safari to Kruger National Park, including morning and afternoon game drives and optional night game drives using powerful spot lights.
Day 26 - a bit of luxury as we overnight at the reserves’ 4-star Manyatta Rock Camp with its stunning bush views.
Day 27-28 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities which will include aerial safari flight (weather dependent).

Week Five
Days 29-31 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities, including farm maintenance and local Shangaan / Swazi language lesson and a braai (barbeque) at the Elephant Boma.
Day 32-34 - 2 or 3 day hiking trail. Equipment is provided although you wish to bring your own sleeping bag.
Day 35 - Day off to relax by the pool at Gazebo or perhaps take one of the organised excursions.

Week Six
Day 36 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities, including a bushwalk, game drive and maintenance of the staff vegetable garden.
Day 37-38 - Tiger fishing on Crocodile River (seasonal). Otherwise conservation activities around the reserve.
Day 39-41 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities, including a sleepout under the stars and 4x4 bush driving.
Day 42 - Day at leisure.

Week Seven
Day 43-46 - Four-day excursion for waterskiing at Vygeboom Dam and camping at Badplaas Resort for mini-golf, gokarts and waterslides. A nice break from the bush.
Day 47-48 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities including a shooting and weapons handling course with rifles and handgun, and climbing Wilson koppie (hill), the highest point at Kwa Madwala.
Day 49 - Day off - chill out at Gazebo Lodge or take a trip into Malelane or one of our organised excursions.

Week Eight
Day 50-54 - hands-on project on the reserve - usually of a conservation, community or maintenance nature.
Day 55 - Kwa Madwala conservation activities - last game drives.
Day 56 - Departure.

Conservation days will consist of a variety of activities such as:
  • Game drives & bush walks, covering a variety of subjects such as tracking, bird identification, tree identification.
  • Lectures and practical experience on various aspects of life on a game reserve, including management, eco-lodges, maintenance, anti-poaching, hunting, agricultural farming, astrology, birding, bush survival and tracker skills.
  • Interaction and assistance with the Kwa Madwala Elephant Back Safari programme.
  • 4x4 driving skills / shooting and gun safety, bush survival skills, sleep outs on the reserve.
  • House chores around the lodge - cleaning, painting, maintenance, cooking, firewood collection, telephone reception. Visit to nearby Malelane for personal shopping and internet/telephone access

Please note: the order of events as listed above may change, for a variety of reasons but that the contents will remain the same except due to unforeseen events beyond our control.

Kwa Madwala is a small private game reserve close to Kruger National Park. Choose from 4 fantastic bush and wildlife experiences. Variety and fun whilst learning about eco-tourism and conservation both on and off the reserve. Numerous vists are made and we bring carnivore and birding experts onto the reserve. A conservation project is undetaken by most groups and we assist the Thembalethu Community Project with tasks relating to the school and orphanage.
