This placement would suit... Lovers of the marine environment keen to learn conservation and ocean-going skills.

The project is based in Plettenberg Bay, a small town near Knysna on the famous Garden Route.

There is easy access to many of the country's most beautiful beaches and nature parks, while the ocean is home to bottlenose and humpback dolphins and Cape Fur Seals, common dolphins, killer whales, Bryde’s and mink whales, southern right whales every day, as well as humpbacks.

This is not a traditional Conservation project - it's a unique mixture of different types of work, from assisting the guides on tourist boats that go out onto the ocean to get close up to shoals of dolphins and whales, to marketing the boating activities of Ocean Safaris, which raises money for the serious research done by Centre for Dolphin Studies on these wonderful creatures.

Money is raised by providing boating and kayaking trips to tourists to view Bottlenose dolphins in their wild and free state together with the endangered Humpback dolphins (of which there are only a few hundred left in the wild). Cape fur seals are also resident on Robberg Peninsula and during the winter months between July and November the shores are graced with the presence of the Southern Right Whales which come to calf and mate in the shallow warm waters.
