Physiotherapy in Auckland, New Zealand This work experience placement enables you to work within physiotherapy working with elite junior swimmers in New Zealand. The club is looking to develop the next generation of New Zealand swimmers for future Olympics and world championships and is looking for volunteers to help maintain and educate the swimmers through their expertise. The experience you gain on this unusual work experience project will be an excellent entry to your CV, going a long way to help you stand out in the crowds of job seekers. About the Swimming Club The club we work with is one of New Zealand’s top youth and age group clubs. It is located at a number of swimming pools in the Auckland area close to your accommodation and was set up 5 years ago by a former New Zealand Olympian and world champion breaststroke swimmer. The club is one of New Zealand’s Premier clubs ranked 5th nationally. The club is relatively small with around 80 members, most of which are competing at national level. The club has currently 10 national swimming champions aged 11 - 18 years. The swimming clubs programme is based heavily around skill and technique in the pool. There is also a dry land programme which has a holistic approach focused on flexibility, core stability, structural alignment and strength. The club employs a number of World champion and Olympic champion swimmers who are involved in coaching activities. You'll work alongside these coaches during your placement. About your Placement You will act as the clubs Physio and deal with any injuries or problems that the swimmers may encounter. The club has a gym attached to the pool where you can introduce specific programs for injured swimmers and also other programs such as Pilates and stretching programs. You'll also get involved in the dry land program which concentrates on flexibility and core stability. As this project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Teaching Project or the School Sports Project Here you can coach a number of sports or teach for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to work with the swimming club. Project Dates and Working Times The swimming season runs all year round apart from a 1 week gap over Christmas from the 23rd of December to the 1st January. Your project days and times are as follows:
Accommodation and locationOur accommodation is located in the city centre of Auckland. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district. You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax. Entertainment at your accommodation includes cheap internet access and cable TV (Sky) as well as an outside balcony. You are literally a stroll from the Sky Tower, harbor and waterfront. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to parts of Auckland and New Zealand or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to the viaduct for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which is close to your accommodation. Maori settlement in Auckland was at least 800 years ago where by different tribes built fortifications on the various volcanoes in Auckland. When the British arrived in 1840 they claimed Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand until Wellington became the capital 25 years later.The city is modern and vibrant - a fun and friendly city with beautiful surrounding islands and harbour. Some of its more famous attractions include the Sky Tower, Rangitoto Island, the Harbour, the Hukani Gulf Islands and the many extinct volcanoes that are in Auckland which provide great views of the city. Auckland has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is New Zealand lamb which can be ordered at many restaurants around the city and is well worth it. For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Auckland's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
