New Zealand are odds on favourites to win the world cup this Autumn and are currently playing some of the most breathtaking rugby the world has ever seen, so where better to hone your skills and develop your game than in the land of the long white cloud? You can look forward to an all round rugby experience at the Sport Lived Rugby Academy. Not only will you benefit from 10 training sessions a week from expert coaches, you also get the opportunity to train and play matches every week for a local club, gain coaching qualifications and experience coaching juniors and attend a one week intensive training course at the New Zealand Institute of Rugby. The 16 week academy placement will focus on the development of core rugby skills such as evasive running, taking the ball into contact, kicking, passing and tackling skills as well as diet, nutrition, exercise and goal setting. These skills will be further honed at the New Zealand Institute of Rugby intensive training course where you will receive coaching and tuition from former international players such as Sean Fitzpatrick, John Eales and Josh Kronfeld. Topics covered during the course include team building, team culture, mental toughness and rugby intelligence. Players will also receive position specific coaching. Playing competitively for a club in New Zealand will give you the opportunity to advance your game, integrate with local players and expand your social network. You also get the chance to attend training sessions of Super 14 team the Hurricanes so you can get a feel for the way professional players train. When participants on the programme are not training they have the opportunity to gain coaching experience by working with junior rugby teams at the college where the academy is based. This provides participants with the chance to broaden their rugby knowledge as well as helping to develop key organisational, leadership and communication skills. Aside from a fantastic sporting experience, the programme includes a ‘Kiwi Experience’ weekend which boasts the chance to see some of the country’s spectacular scenery and sample adventure activities such as white water rafting and kayaking. (You can even try the North Island’s highest Bungee Jump!!) Participants on the Sport Lived Rugby Academy share dormitories in a separate wing of the college. As well as having all meals provided players have access to the schools excellent sporting facilities which include a gym, swimming pool, squash and tennis courts and 40 acres of sports fields. All dormitories are equipped with Sky TV, DVD players and stereo systems so there should be plenty to occupy your free time.
